Goethe certificate

Description

The Goethe-Institut is the organization for the international promotion of the German language and culture.

The Goethe certificates are widely recognized by many businesses and academic institutions around the world as proof of language proficiency. Goethe certificates are usually required to apply for a job or to study at a university in German-speaking Switzerland or another German-speaking country.

There are six levels, which follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficiency/mastery). At A1 to B2 there are separate also exams for 10 to 16-year-olds.

A1

You understand simple everyday phrases that are necessary to meet specific everyday needs. You are able to tell a short story about yourself, maintaining an elementary conversation if the interviewee speaks slowly and clearly.

A2

You understand individual sentences and frequently used phrases that relate to certain aspects of everyday life. You can maintain a conversation that is based on the exchange of ordinary information about everyday life, education, everyday needs and much more.

B1

You are able to express your thoughts about various topics. You can explain yourself in all sorts of situations and make coherent messages on topics of interest. You have no difficulties in describing your wishes, briefly explaining your point of view and expressing your opinion.
